4 Steps to painting the Interior 1 2 3 4

4 Consider the conditions

Before you decide to start your project it would be advisable to check the weather forecast. Painting in poor conditions can greatly compromise the paint job even indoors. Avoid painting if there is a chance of rain as interrupting the work can affect the overall look to the completed project.

For many paints, it is recommended that you do not paint below 5oC which not only applies to the air temperature but also the substrate you wish to paint. Painting in cold conditions causes the paint not to spread so evenly, slow down the drying time therefore allowing airborne debris and insects to stick.

As it is inadvisable to paint below 5°C it is also not recommended to paint in direct sunlight or where the air temperature and substrate is 30°C. As the paint dries forming a film, if the drying process is accelerated it may greatly compromise the durability.

Good ventilation

Most interior wall paints are water based and are low odour emulsion paints.

The trim paints and stains market is still divided between solvent-based and water-based products. The odour associated with use of solvent-based coatings tend to linger which can be an irritation especially if the room is not properly ventilated. In such cases, care should be taken to ensure sufficient ventilation during and immediately after the paint job is complete.
